Monarch bowlers Jake Fink and Brianna Musgrave notched second places in Class 2A at the state tournament on Monday, and Brittany Musgrave took 16th place.

Head Coach Shelby Brawner said Jake started off with a great game, rolling a 225.

“He stuck a few 10 pins, but the number of strikes he threw made up for that,” she said.

Jake continued to do well in the second game and bowled a 235. He threw a 202 in the third game and was able to place seventh, giving him the chance to compete in the bracket.

In the bracket, Jake went up against Damien Timm from Urbandale.

“They went frame for frame right up until the 10th where Jake won 231 to 229,” said Brawner. “He was now in the top four.”

His next matchup was against Jacob Shaffer from Marion.

“Again they went frame for frame, but Jake ended up beating him 238 to 234 landing him in the finals,” she said.

Jake’s final matchup was Kendall Bell from Council Bluffs Jefferson. He lost 203 to 176 but ended up placing second in the state.

Brianna and Brittany Musgrave

Brawner said Brianna Musgrave started out well.

“She bowled a 235 in her first game, going strike for strike with Brittany (Musgrave). She really struggled in the second game,” the coach added. “With a few tough breaks and opens, Brianna threw a 135.

“She knew she needed to have a great score her third game to compete. She found her mark quickly and was able to bowl a 248 for her last game,” Brawner said.

That performance landed Brianna in fifth place to advance her to the bracket.

Brianna bowled against Faith Renshaw from Lewis Central in her first game and won 203 to 178. That put her in the top four.

Her next matchup was against Bailey Gill from Le Mars.

“Brianna struck out from the frame frame and beat Bailey 213 to 191,” said Brawner. “This landed her in the finals where she was bowling against Jaelynn Ketterer from Keokuk. Brianna lost 205 to 179 but ended up placing second in the state.”

Brawner said that Brittany Musgrave started off strong in her first game with a 233.

“She had a wide range of boards she could throw over and still hit the pocket,” the coach said. “She struggled in her second game. She had three opens in the beginning but managed to throw strikes or spares to finish her game and bowl a 163.”

Brittany’s last game was about the same as her second; she bowled a 160.

“She wasn't able to throw the strikes like she did in the first game but was able to pick up her spares to stay in it,” said Brawner. “She gave it a good run and finished 16th in the state with a 556 series. Compared to scores last year, this series would have placed her seventh. The level of competition across the state has improved quite a bit this year.

“It was a great showing for Denison-Schleswig in the individual competition,” Brawner added. “We couldn't be prouder of how well everyone did today. It's great watching their hard work throughout the season pay off.”

The Monarch boys’ team competed at state on Wednesday afternoon.
