Presenting Matilda

The Denison Middle School Vocal Department presented the musical Matilda Jr. last week Thursday at the Denison High School Fine Arts Center. The musical tells the story of an extraordinary girl who is unappreciated by her parents. Matilda is sent to a school where she makes friends, but she and her friends must face the bullying of the headmistress, Agatha Trunchbull. In this picture, Agatha Trunchbull (Lauren Lambert) gives the students double-time exercises to break them. Matilda (Olivia Devore) is in the front left of the photo. See more photos inside. On stage with Matilda

A chorus of students sing the school song upon the first day of classes at Matilda’s school.  The production used various lighting techniques to set the mood.

Matilda (Olivia Devore) and Miss Honey (Claire Olsen) sing a duet about what they wish to do when they grow up. Miss Honey is a teacher at Matilda’s school.

The Escapologist (Jackson Boettger) and the Acrobat (Lyrisa Wiese) are characters of Matilda’s creation and act out a story as it is told to the librarian.

Matilda (Olivia Devore), Miss Honey (Claire Olsen) and Mrs. Phelps (the librarian) discuss the future now that Agatha Trunchbull, the overbearing schoolmistress, has left.

Matilda’s father, Mr. Wormwood (Jasper Christensen), tells his scheme to sell old cars as new luxury cars to Russian businessmen. Mrs. Wormwood (Addison Schillerberg) stands by Matilda’s chair, and Michael Wormwood (Jayden Ghislandi) is on the left.

Nigel (Autumn Koch) pretends to wake up after a supposed bout with a sleeping disorder. He is trying to escape punishment for playing a trick on Agatha Trunchbull. Matilda devises the scheme to cover Nigel with coats and tells Trunchbull that Nigel has been asleep under the coats for an hour. His punishment would have been to be put in the chokey, a closet lined with nails, spikes and broken glass.

Under the glaring gaze of Trunchbull, Bruce (William Mathies) devours the chocolate cake piece by piece, but at the end, Trunchbull still wants to put Bruce into the chokey.

In this scene, the students cheer on Bruce as he eats an entire chocolate cake that Miss Trunchbull made him eat. From left are Claire Olsen (Miss Honey), Nyadaang Koang (Alice), Quinn Vetter (Tommy), Olivia Devore (Matilda), Scarlet Torrey (Hortensia), Jessie Schmidt (Erica), Autumn Koch (Nigel), Ella Bahnsen (Amanda), and Jaylinn Koch (Lavender).

In this scene, Matilda (Olivia Devore, in the foreground) uses her power to write a message on the blackboard to tell Agatha Trunchbull to give her father’s house back to her niece, Miss Honey.

Kacie Schulte hands a gift to the director, Tylor Schulte. The card says “Farewell from your favorite maggots,” using the word that Miss Trunchbull called the students.
