Wiebers to remain as DHS principal

Dave Wiebers, who has dedicated four decades to the district, previously announced his retirement as Denison High School (DHS) principal effective at the end of the 2023-2024 school year. He has now agreed to continue to serve as high school principal through the 2024-2025 school year.

A press release from the school district says the decision comes at an important moment for the district as it undergoes leadership changes. Current Denison Community School District (DCSD) Superintendent Mike Pardun will retire at the end of this school year, and Wiebers’ continued leadership will help ensure a smooth transition.

“Mr. Wiebers’ willingness to extend his tenure with us is a testament to his dedication to our community and the ongoing education of our students,” said Pardun. “He has had a pivotal role in enhancing our educational landscape over the years. His leadership will be crucial as we navigate this phase of transition, particularly with the arrival of Dr. Kim Buryanek as DCSD superintendent.”

A DHS graduate himself, Wiebers has served as high school principal since 2016. He also was the district’s activities director and head football coach and is a member of the Iowa Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame. However, his profound impact extends beyond his official roles, having impacted numerous lives through his dedication to teaching, coaching and leadership.

“I was moved to reconsider my retirement realizing that my time with the Denison Community School District is not yet complete,” said Wiebers. “My commitment to our students’ success and our community’s wellbeing remains as strong as ever, and I’m excited to continue serving our students, staff and families for another school year.”

The district also acknowledges the retirements of Business Manager Scott Larson and Superintendent Pardun and extends its gratitude for their service and dedication to the district.

Pardun will conclude a 35-year career in education, including two decades as superintendent. His career began as an elementary school teacher before becoming a principal in the district.

Larson has spent 35 years with DCSD, serving his first 19 years as a business teacher before transitioning into the business manager role for the past 16 years. His expertise and leadership have been critical to the financial stewardship and operational excellence of the district.
