D-S girls win home tennis meet against St. Albert, fall to Lewis Central

 
 

The Denison-Schleswig varsity and junior varsity girls scored wins against St. Albert at a tennis meet in Denison on Monday, April 22.

The varsity girls won 6-3.

In singles play, Kiana Schulz (#1) won 8-0; Abby Gutierrez (#2) won 8-3, Abbey Meseck (#5) won 8-2 and Zoey Beery (#6) won 8-1.

In doubles play, Kiana Schulz and Claire Leinen won 8-2, and Abby Gutierrez and Lynnae Johnson won 8-3.

“It was a great evening of tennis,” said Head Coach Spencer Pauley. “St. Albert is always a tough opponent and it felt great to get 4-2 out of singles play. Then, we took two doubles matches which helped us get the 6-3 win.”

The junior varsity won its meet 8-2. Abby Ratliff, Shelby Kastner, Christell Salazar and Leila Jaime all won their singles matches. 

The junior varsity swept the doubles matches.

 
 
 

On Friday, April 19, the D-S girls were hosted by a tough seventh-ranked Lewis Central team and fell 6-3.

“We fell a little short but gave it our best shot,” said Pauley. “We just couldn’t finish some games in singles, which is what really hurt us.”

He listed the following highlights.

Kiana Schulz remained undefeated; she beat her opponent 8-3.

Kiana Schulz and Claire Leinen have great team chemistry and communication, which helped them get an 8-4 win.

Along with those wins, Abbey Meseck and Zoey Beery won their #3 doubles match, 8-4.

On Thursday, April 18, the Monarch girls were shorthanded against Sioux City East and lost 5-4 in matches.

Highlights from the meet were another singles win by Kiana Schulz at #1, a #2 singles win by Abby Gutierrez, and what Pauley said was Claire Leinen’s best win of her career at #3 singles.
