Monarch girls fall in soccer match shootout

After playing even through regulation time, two overtime periods and shootouts, the Denison-Schleswig girls’ varsity soccer team fell to Kuemper Catholic in sudden victory on Monday, April 29, at Denison.

Kuemper struck first in the match, scoring just 2:11 into the match on a shot from eight yards out following a crossing pass from the right corner to the left post that got through the entire Denison-Schleswig defense.

The Monarchs’ Libby Leon scored just 3:09 into the match on a shot from 23 yards out near the left post following a steal from a Kuemper defender trying to clear the ball away from Aremy Santos.

The remainder of regulation and both 10-minute overtimes were scoreless, so the match went into shootouts, with both teams alternating shots from the 12-yard penalty kick mark. Kuemper kicked first and made three of five kicks; one kick was saved by Sam Chandler. Denison-Schleswig had shots made by Karla Sanchez, Libby Leon and Aremy Santos.

After being tied 3-3 after the first round of shootouts, the shootout went to sudden victory. Kuemper’s first two shots were saved by Sam Chandler. Denison’s first two shots weren’t on goal. Kuemper made its third shot while Denison-Schleswig’s third shot was saved by Kuemper’s goalkeeper, ending the match.

“We made one mistake on defense very early and they made us pay for it,” said Head Coach Chris Eller. “Otherwise, we played great defense all game, especially shutting down their speedy forward who had 12 goals this season coming into the game. We had four really good chances in regulation and overtime to score goals, but we were either off target from wide open shots 18-20 yards out or shot right to their keeper from about 10 yards out. This loss hurts not just because it’s a conference loss, but also in my opinion we outplayed Kuemper, out possessed Kuemper and created more chances to win.”

Shots on goal were 13 for Kuemper and eight for the Monarchs.

Monarch goalie Sam Chandler had 12 saves in the match and three more saves in the penalty kick shootouts.

With the loss, Denison-Schleswig fell to 3-8 overall and 1-4 in the Hawkeye 10 conference.
