Lady Monarchs top Storm Lake in tennis

The Denison-Schleswig Lady Monarchs registered an 8-1 home tennis meet win over Storm Lake on Tuesday. The meet was rescheduled from April 2.

“I was really proud tonight with how some of the girls responded to adversity,” said Head Coach Spencer Pauley. “The singles matches were close, but they found a way to win and never gave up. We need to stay focused and have a great few days of practice because we will be tested when Shenandoah comes to Denison on Friday.”

Highlights

Kiana Schulz had an impressive singles match win. “Winning at #1 is never easy, but she has been playing at a high level helping her beat a great opponent today,” said Pauley.

Abby Gutierrez was losing 1-5 in her match but ended up winning 9-8 in a tiebreaker. “This was one of the biggest wins and comebacks for her. I am proud of how she never gave up and continued to fight,” the coach said.

Claire Leinen had a lot of great forehands in her singles match, helping her get the win.

Abbey Meseck’s serves were on point, helping her get singles and doubles wins.

Zoey Beery and Abby Ratliff had a great doubles win. “Their aggressive play at the net and strategic ball placement was phenomenal,” said Pauley.

Monarch girls win first tennis meet of season

 
 

The Denison-Schleswig Lady Monarchs started off their tennis season with a 9-0 win at home over Harlan on April 4.

“Coming into today (April 4), we hadn’t practiced too much because of the weather and spring break,” said Head Coach Spencer Pauley. “I knew that they would be in the same boat as us though. I was super proud of how we played.”

Highlights

• Kiana Schulz picked up a great win at #1 singles. “Her serve looks even more powerful than last year,” said Pauley.

• Abby Gutierrez and Claire Leinen had to grind out their wins in singles today. “I was impressed with how they kept their composure all match. They both will be tough to beat,” said the coach.

• Lynnae Johnson and Abby Meseck and Zoey Beery all dominated in their matches. “Their consistent but powerful play was too much for their opponents,” said Pauley.

• Abby Ratliff won her first varsity doubles match with Zoey Beery. “I was impressed with how well they meshed together on the court with limited playing time,” the coach said.

Monarch girls win 8-0 in tennis over Abraham Lincoln

 

The Denison-Schleswig girls improved their meet record to 2-0 by defeating Abraham Lincoln 9-0 in matches at a home meet on Monday, April 8.

“We knew coming into today that if we can play how we have been playing recently, that we had a great chance to beat Abraham Lincoln,” said Head Coach Spencer Pauley. “We started right where we left off and won 9-0. It's fun watching this team because of how deep of a team we have.”

Kiana Schulz and Claire Leinen fell behind in their doubles match right away but battled back because of their aggressive play at the net and powerful serves.

Lynnae Johnson and Abby Gutierrez are a fun doubles team to watch. They can get to almost any shot because of how fast they are.

Abbey Meseck and Zoey Beery have good team chemistry, helping them pick up a win.

Junior varsity results

The junior varsity went 7-1 in singles matches and 3-1 in doubles matches against Abraham Lincoln.
