The Denison-Schleswig Lady Monarchs started its season with a 5-0 conference victory at home against Creston on April 4.

“Tonight was a great win to start the season. Defensively, we dodged a bullet very early as we nearly were down 1-0 right away. After that, we played great defense and stopped almost all of Creston’s counters without a shot,” said Head Coach Chris Eller. “When they did shoot, Sam Chandler did a good job of saving all their shots on goal.

“Offensively, we passed the ball pretty well and more importantly the girls played very unselfishly,” he added. “Our movement and spacing were pretty solid for most of the game. At times we got bunched up, or we kept the ball on one side of the field and had too many bodies to try to get our shots through. When we swung the ball side to side we got some one-on-one shots. We got a couple of goals on very good passes through gaps in their defense.”

Eller added that Creston’s goalkeeper had some very nice saves.

“I thought the girls did a great job of recognizing when to shoot and we had lots of girls take the shots when the opportunity was there,” he said. “I really like the trust the girls showed with their teammates tonight.”

Lady Monarchs shut out Riverside in soccer

The Denison-Schleswig Lady Monarchs improved their record to 2-0 with a 6-0 win in soccer over Riverside in an away match on Tuesday.

Denison-Schleswig led 5-0 at halftime.

“We didn’t play our best soccer, but we did enough to get a win and also got 23 girls into the match for significant playing time,” said Head Coach Chris Eller. “With three games in four days, I didn’t want to have anybody play too many minutes tonight.”

He added that his team struggled with its touches as Riverside’s grass football field was very bumpy; the ball took a lot of funny hops on passes.

The Lady Monarchs also had a lot of shots go over the crossbar or just wide of the goal. At least three shots hit the post or the crossbar.

“Defensively, we had some breakdowns and dodged a couple of bullets when we substituted,” Eller said. “We will need to develop some depth this year because we won’t have all of our players for several games this year due to other activities that the girls are involved in. Hopefully, that depth will develop with continued learning at practice.”
